How to Choose a Home Improvement Contractor

You’ve finally set aside money to do some much-needed home remodeling, and you’re ready to get your home improvement project started. But just how do you go about choosing a contractor for the numerous home remodelers listed on your Google search? Home Improvements Unlimited LLC of Columbus, OH gives you a few tips for finding a home improvement professional.

1. Ask around.

If you have a friend who recently went through a home-remodeling project (and you like the finished product), start there—get the name of the home remodeler who did the work. You can also put out a general “need recommendations” email to your friends, family, and co-workers who live in your area. Getting firsthand knowledge of a home improvement company’s work beats any review you’ll find online (but those can be helpful too, so do your research.)

2. Do some digging.

After you have a short list of home-improvement remodelers, check into their credentials (are they licensed and insured?). Find out about past work, and look into their customer service ratings. You’ll also want to browse the remodeling company’s website to pay attention to its professionalism, guarantees, and remodeling process.

3. Conduct in-person interviews.

Most home improvement experts recommend interviewing at least three different contractors before deciding on one. Dana Dratch on Bankrate.com recommends, “Interview contractors until you find the right one—even if it takes awhile.” You want to pay attention to their professionalism, communication skills, customer service, and knowledge of the project you want to complete. Ask every question you might have. A good contractor will take the time to answer your questions thoroughly.

4. Gather quotes.

You may decide to get quotes from everyone you interview or get two to compare. However, be sure you get a written quote and detailed estimate before signing any contracts. Read it thoroughly and ask questions if anything seems vague.

5. Pay attention to your instincts.

After you’ve thoroughly investigated and interviewed potential home remodelers, don’t move forward if something in your gut doesn’t feel settled. Even if all your friends are saying he or she is the BEST, you need to be comfortable with the contractor in your home and confident that he or she will help you meet your home-improvement goals.
